What would happen to my National Insurance record?

Short answer

Your UK record would still exist, and the UK–Ireland social security convention lets contributions in one country count in the other. But how a change of state would be handled has not been set out.

What we know Fact

  • HMRC keeps National Insurance records for the whole UK.
  • Under the 2019 UK–Ireland Convention on Social Security, periods of contributions in each country can count towards benefits in the other.

What is still unclear Interpretation

Whether UK pension rights earned in Northern Ireland would be paid by the UK, transferred to Ireland, or a mix, is unanswered.
