Would Northern Ireland have to fund its own healthcare system after leaving the UK?

Short answer

Health would become part of the Irish system. Ireland's health service works differently: many people pay to see a GP, and no plan has said how a free-at-the-point-of-use service here would be kept or paid for.

What we know Fact

  • In Northern Ireland, GP visits are free for everyone.
  • In the Republic, GP care is free only for those with medical or GP visit cards; others pay per visit.

What is still unclear Interpretation

Unity campaigners have not set out how health care would be funded or organised.

Our view Pro-Union

Free health care when you need it is one of the most valued parts of life in the UK.
